Where To Buy Caviar?

Caviar is easily one of the most sought-out delicacies in the world. The sturgeon roe has skyrocketed in price due to the fact that the sturgeon is one of the most endangered fishes in the world. In addition to driving the cost of caviar up, the shortage has also made it somewhat harder to find the product.

So, where is the best place to buy caviar?

The best place to buy caviar is online on Amazon or through an online store that specializes in selling sustainably harvested caviar. In addition to shopping for caviar online, though, there’s also a decent chance that you can get caviar delivered through a food/grocery delivery service or find it at your local grocery store or seafood restaurant.

These days, I don’t eat caviar quite as much as I used to, but I want to make sure that I get the highest-quality caviar that money can buy when I do. Unfortunately, it’s become a bit of a hard-to-find product. Thankfully, I’ve found some solutions to fix my caviar cravings.

Below, you’ll find my detailed guide on where to buy caviar the next time you’re having cravings.

Where You Can Buy Caviar

Over the past few years, a niche market for high-quality delicacies like caviar has risen in America. While these foods have always been available at high-end restaurants, it’s only recently that they’ve become more available to the general public.

In my opinion, this is because delivery speeds have become incredibly fast (with some services offering same-day food delivery), and the advent of new food-shipping technology and packaging.

The latest packaging combined with faster delivery speeds means that you can order pretty much anything that you want without having to worry about it going bad.

I’ve found great caviar both online and at some local specialty shops. So, let’s take a few minutes to talk about where you can buy caviar with that in mind.

Below, I’ve included the best ways to find great caviar, as well as the pros and cons of different methods of buying caviar.

Online

Buying caviar online tends to give you the greatest amount of choices.

You’ll be able to find everything from authentic sturgeon roe to red caviar, depending on what you’re looking for. The best part about buying online is that you’ll usually be able to find caviar that comes from all of the best sturgeon in the world, including:

In most cases, your sturgeon will be sealed in a vacuumed container, so you won’t have to worry about it going bad. Typically, delivery takes no longer than 2 or 3 days.

Pros

  • More types of caviar available.
  • Delivered in a vacuum-sealed container.
  • Get great deals by ordering direct from the distributor.

Cons

  • You have to wait a couple of days to get your caviar.

Amazon

Amazon is probably the easiest way to get caviar delivered to you fast. This is especially true if you have a Prime membership. Overall, I’ve found that Amazon has a decent selection of caviar, but not great.

It can be harder to find the authentic sturgeon roe on Amazon due to the fact that only the more commonly sold roe tend to be readily available.

It’s a great place to find lumpfish, hackleback, or paddlefish caviar, but not the best if you’re looking for osetra, beluga, or other fancier types of caviar

Online Caviar Shops

If you’re looking to purchase ultra-high-quality caviar and get access to a greater number of types, flavors, and brands, then you can’t go wrong with online shops that specialize in selling caviar. In most cases, you’ll be able to order directly from the producer, which means that you’ll have a true “farm to table” experience.

The best part is that there’s no middleman, so you don’t have to pay any extra fees to Amazon. The only drawback is that shipping may take an extra day or two longer than Amazon.

Meal/Grocery Delivery

Another great way to get your caviar is to have it delivered by using a service such as Uber Eats, Postmates, or Door Dash. Once you download one of their apps and create an account, you’ll be able to order freshly-prepared caviar from your favorite restaurant in town or have the delivery driver pick it up at your local grocery store or seafood vendor. The only drawback is that delivery fees can be high, and you’ll also have to tip the driver.

Pros

  • Fast delivery (usually within a couple of hours).
  • Support local businesses.
  • Order freshly-prepared caviar.

Cons

  • High delivery costs.
  • You have to tip the driver.

Door Dash

Door Dash is one of the most popular delivery apps, and they operate in most mid to large-sized cities in the United States. Although they specialize in restaurant delivery, they can also pick up food from local grocers or specialty shops and deliver it to your front doorstep.

Uber Eats

Uber Eats works the same as Door Dash. I’ve really found that the two services aren’t all that different from one another. I have both apps, though, because sometimes one app has longer wait times than another. This often depends on what city you live in. For instance, some cities have more Door Dash drivers.

Final Word: Is It A Good Idea To Order Caviar Online?

Nine times out of ten, when I buy caviar, I end up buying it online.

I’m a big fan of specialty caviars like Osetra and Beluga caviar, which can be very hard to find in my local grocery stores.

There is a decent sushi restaurant that has some fantastic caviar dishes that I order through Uber Eats sometimes. However, they’re a little bit expensive, and I typically prefer to prepare the dish myself.

That being said, ordering caviar online is probably the best route for most people.

Not only will you get the best deals on the delicacy, but you’ll also be able to seek out specific farmers and distributors.

In addition, the sheer amount of high-quality, sustainably farmed caviar brands on the internet make it the obvious choice for most caviar lovers like myself.
